Rama VIII Bridge Body - Suicide Man's Identity Revealed
News Story 1
Physicians at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Siriraj Hospital confirmed that a headless body and a severed head of a westerner found hanging below Rama VIII bridge on Sunday are from the same person.
The forensic examination also indicated that the victim may attempt to commit suicide.
Physicians added that similar cases had taken place in foreign countries before since the head could be detached from the body when the victim jumped off the bridge.
Deputy national police chief Jongrak Chutanont, referring to the forensic examination, said it would be likely that the victim committed suicide because the wounds were jagged, and there were no indications that he was decapitated by a sharp object.
As a result, Pol Gen Jongrak dismissed the possibility that the victim was murdered by a foreign crime syndicates.
He said police preliminarily assumed that the victim could be a 49-year-old Italian named Jaeta Jiovani who travelled to Thailand last Wednesday.
News Story Update
Police believe the Italian man who hanged himself from the Rama VIII bridge committed suicide because of unemployment and illness.
The man had chronic diseases -- he coughed regularly and had a tumor in his stomach, deputy national police chief Jongrak Juthanont told reporters on Wednesday.
Police identified the man as Maurizio Tosabori, 54. He was an architect.
The man was not Giovanni Gaeta as local media reported on Tuesday, Pol Gen Jongrak said.
The identification came after investigators found a hostel owner in Khao San road where Tosabori rented a room.
The owner, Wimon Jongjai, said Tosabori stayed at her hostel for free for two weeks before he disappeared on Saturday after she asked him to vacate the room.
Police checked the room and found Tosabori's belongings, including his passport. A letter was also found in the room. He left a message for Mrs Wimon thanking her for the accommodation and apologising for not paying the rent.
