Independent Panel Urges Goverment to Enact Special Crowd Control Law
An independent panel, which has probed the October 7 crackdown on protesters, has proposed that a special crowd control law be enacted as rules of engagement for authorities to deal with demonstrators.
A well-informed Government House source said the proposal was made in the 2,289-page reported submitted to the government on Tuesday.
According to the source, the panel cited arguments of both police and protesters as reasons for proposing that a special law be enacted.
While demonstrators claimed they had their right to rally, police claimed they had to keep the law. And when police claimed demonstrators were armed, the protesters claimed they rallied peacefully.
The panel said the new law would tackle these arguments and tell the authorities how to deal with protesters in each situation.
