Songkran in Chiang Mai.

Thailand's New Year, known as Songkran, is celebrated with enthusiasm and ceremony in the temple-studded city of Chiang Mai. Songkran in Chiang Mai is one of the biggest parties of the year and they certainly don't hold back.

Songkran is a highlight of the Thai year, as licence is given to everyone to spray one another with water, from buckets, water pistols, elephants's trunks or any other receptacle that comes to hand. A Queen of the Water is chosen, bands play and the female folk go about in processions in Chiang Mai. The water-splashing becomes more animated and vigorous as the festival progresses and people go so far as to wade in the Ping River, scooping up water in containers to dump over friends and strangers alike. It is a great chance to cool off.

The water splashing although it can get raucous at times, is supposed to highlight this day of family binding and love for one another in a playful and respectful way. Don't get too carried away. To get a good view of the action, try The Pae Gate. Book your accommodation early and don't be afraid to get wet.
