Thousands of Thais lined up to receive cheques worth 2,000 baht each. The Thai Government has begun handing out cheques worth $55 each to millions of low income earners in a move it says will help stimulate the country's ailing economy. The so-called "help the nation" programme launched on Thursday is worth more than $500m and targets more than nine million people earning less than 15,000 baht (or about $424) a month. Critics however have condemned the hand-out, labelling it a "buy-off" from a Government they say came to power through illegal means.
